Raising children in our tech savvy world is no easy task for parents. Technology is competitive, games and apps are competitive, and most dishearteningly parents and children are also competitive. Everyone feels the need to show and prove themselves as bigger and better than all of the rest.  There is absolutely a time and place for competition in life, I question whether early childhood education is the time or the place. With these thoughts in mind, we have partnered with appp media for a featured review of their educational apps for little learners.

As an Early Childhood Educator with a strong Montessori Method background, I was very hesitant to allow the inclusion of technology or electronic educational games and devices before three years of age, particularly in our family's home. A teen, a tween and a toddler keep our home "interesting" to say the least, especially the latter two, our boys. Our household invests equal amounts of money into open ended play manipulatives as we spend on our gaming system, which isn't really much comparatively speaking. Again, no easy task as parents of a middle school aged son. We strive to maintain a healthy balance for him, knowing that our toddler is learning while observing everyone's technological interactions.

Enter appp media.  I was delighted to find appp media, apples, peaches, pears & plums media, an award-winning German based company with fun, educational apps that are gender-neutral and safe for my toddler to play without the worry of in-app purchases, advertisements or the collection of personal information.  Their current selection of apps includes My First App - Vol. 1 Vehicles, My First App - Vol. 2 Circus, and Professor Kim - What's Missing Here?

The app that first caught my attention was the My First App - Vol. 1 Vehicles. The busy boys that I love dearly, found the app on my iPhone before I was able to open it myself. The sounds of sirens and laughter were echoing throughout the house. The bright, lively colors and the amusing animation had their attention immediately. The matching game was my toddler's favorite, he could not get enough of the bad guy rolling away in the back of the police car.  "Oh, no!"

The appp media apps are primarily recommended for ages 4 and up, my toddler isn't quite 4 years old yet, however he was able to enjoy the matching and puzzles games with little assistance and my middle-schooler was able to provide guidance for the pinball game which requires more developed eye-hand coordination. We recommend all of the appp media games especially since they are reasonably priced, there are no high scores to defend and therefore, no winners or losers in the games, except that bad guy in the back of the police car. "Oh, no!"
