Is there really a secret to happiness?  Why are we even keeping happiness a secret anyway?  Here's a thought, let's all agree to live happily ever after and keep the secret to sadness hidden away forever.  Deal?  If only it were just that simple to change our thought processes.  What messages are we sending to our children about living a happy life?  It is my wholehearted belief that there is no better way to fill up your life than by sharing, caring and giving to others.  Happiness is in its purest form when it is shared, like any other secret.  The ever lovable Hugo is the perfect illustration of the pursuit of happiness in Hugo the Happy Starfish The Secret to Happiness, 2012 Award-Winning Finalist book written by Suzy Liebermann, author of this enlightening series of children's books.

Meet the lovable, huggable cuteness that is Hugo the Happy Starfish as he and his aquatic friends set off on an adventure that they hope will lead to happiness.  That little starfish with big eyes and an even bigger heart learns along the way that he is happiest when he is sharing with his friends, an essential life lesson for children to come to term with as they develop.  My little toddler is still in the early stages of social development and while he enjoyed the wonderful story and brilliant illustrations of Hugo the Happy Starfish, he is still happy to claim, "That's mine!"  Yes, we will revisit Hugo's message of happiness and sharing many times as his social interactions increase, he is my little work in progress.  We loved the simple secret to happiness- sharing and all of Hugo's friends, encounters and of course, the happy ending.  Hugo the Happy Starfish The Secret to Happiness shares the key to happiness with readers of all ages.  Now that you know Hugo's secret to happiness, it's you turn.  What's your secret to happiness?  I love a story with a happy ending.

Author's Summary

Hugo is a little starfish. He finds his life dull. Tired of feeling sad, one day he sets off to find happiness. After much searching, he discovers something that makes his heart do a somersault! Sharing with others is the only thing that makes him truly happy; all other things just made him feel better for a little while.

Adults strive to teach children to share within their communities. Encouraging children to give teaches them empathy, as well as a sense of social responsibility. Children can feel empowered by giving and sharing with others.
