"How does she do it?" If you're like me, they are so many successful and prominent female entrepreneurs that we put on a pedestal as being created by divine intervention. Mahisha Dellinger, CEO and Founder of CURLS, natural hair care product line is exemplary of a business savvy powerhouse. As a professional and mentor, Mahisha gives back to up and coming entrepreneurs with valuable insight into her personal journey "from the projects to the penthouse."
When you really think about it- yes, these iconic women we admire are the result of divine intervention, as we are divinely created as well. The difference in achievements often times come from the inner drive and determination to have more, to be more than just happy to be alive. Having ambition does not by any means indicate that gratitude is counterproductive. Gratitude is your foundation upon which passion and productivity are established upon. Dellinger expressed that a personal motivating factor in her launch into the hair care industry was a "strong hunger and desire to change my destiny, to shuffle up the cards that I was dealt and create a new hand," following having had the misfortune to experience racism firsthand in corporate america.
The corporate beginnings of CURLS originated in 2002 in California by CEO, Mahisha Dellinger. From its inception to the present, CURLS maintains the highest standards for offering their customers "quality ingredients and product dependability". Honing in on what had previously been a "stale market, with not a lot of options", Ms. Dellinger knew what was need and what she wanted to see on the market as a consumer. CURLS came to fruition as Mahisha found herself as a young, wife and mother contemplating her options for completing college and being able to gain professional experience. "It wasn't if, it was how. I had to do it." Dellinger attests as her motivation toward her entrepreneurial endeavors.
At the risk of sounding cliche', there is nothing about an upbringing that cultivated the strong-willed, street smart buisness woman managing the daily operations of CURLS today that Dellinger would change. If asked at age twenty, there might have been some residual embarrassment about her upbringing, yet as a more confident entrepreneur, she attributes a portion of her success to those humble beginnings.
The first step in business planning from Dellinger is "to know your industry backward and forward, do your due diligence." Following the initial start up process, Mahisha's advice is "to get a mentor right away. Connect with someone that has been there and done that, someone that may have contacts that can help you. Professional development is super important, continue to develop yourself." Another recommendation for all up and coming companies is to utilize the services of SCORE, "an amazing organization that offers free services for entrepreneurs."
Boasting famous name consumers such as Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, Nia Long, Tia Mowry, Chili of TLC, Blair Underwood, Ashanti and other acclaimed celebrities supporting CURLS products, it is no wonder why CURLS is an industry leader in the natural hair care niche'. Look forward to the launch of additional new products and an expansion to additional retailers in 2015. Mahisha Dellinger is also releasing her first book titled, "Against All Odds" in addition to other entertainment pieces which are currently under development.
