We hear and quite often have even said the phrase "you only live once" on a daily basis with little real contemplation to the significance of those words reduced to the acronym YOLO. To hear the voices of children, some less than a decade on this planet speak emotionally full of conviction and compassion about the need for environmental awareness is powerful. HBO Documentary Films and The American Museum of Natural History collaborate to present Saving My Tomorrow, a family special showing exclusively on HBO.
Kids and Celebs Power SAVING MY TOMORROW
by HBO & the American Museum of Natural History
“Earth is our home. We only have one and if we mess this up… where do we go next? We don’t have another earth right next to us, just in case we lose this one,” says Hippocrates, age 8 featured in Saving My Tomorrow.
"From the children who will inherit the planet comes a collection of songs, activism and heartfelt tips for protecting the earth. In Saving My Tomorrow, kids share their thoughts on subjects ranging from endangered animals to climate change, while exploring stories with the Museum’s scientists about the plants and animals that are affected by a changing earth. A lyrical mix of science, animation and music, this family special celebrates the wonders of the natural world and is a call from kids to kids to help take care of the planet."
“This show is for the children because tomorrow belongs to them,” comments Sheila Nevins, president, HBO Documentary Films. “Their passion will make the difference in saving our planet.” Supporters and featured celebrity activists contributing to Saving My Tomorrow include featured readings by Alan Cumming, Tina Fey, Liam Neeson, Susan Sarandon, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Jeffrey Wright alongside an appearance by Pharrell Williams and musical performances by Lennon & Maisy, Ziggy Marley, Stephin Merritt, Elizabeth Mitchell, Jason Mraz, Willie Nelson, Karen O, Pete Seeger, They Might Be Giants and Dan Zanes.
Research discussions on topics such as climate change are also featured with Dr. Melanie Stiassny, Dr. Mark Siddall and Paul Sweet from the American Museum of Natural History, as they guide students through rarely seen museum collections, sharing insights about the importance of biodiversity and conservation. “We are thrilled to collaborate with HBO on this important program highlighting children’s passion for nature and their instinctive sense of responsibility to care for our environment,” says Ellen V. Futter, president of the American Museum of Natural History. “Our children will inherit the planet, so it is only fitting that their thoughts, concerns and inherent love of nature be part of the larger conservation discussion.”
Sharing educational trends in environmental studies with facts, stats, and figures that raised my personal level of awareness, these children, our youth and our future are imparting knowledge. In complete honesty, I would have to admit that there was information that I as a self-proclaimed "crunchy mama" received for the very first time. And all of this transformational wisdom speaks out of the mouths of babes.
Viewing Saving My Tomorrow with my tween and toddler was a most valuable experience. We witnessed children from elementary school to high school utilizing their personal talents to deliver the message, the plea if you will of Saving My Tomorrow. The strength of character demonstrated by these youthful environmentalists may have initially been a learning experience at some point in their young lives, however, today conservation and preservation have become their lifestyles. As I see life, we have the chance and the choice to make a difference each day. YOLO. Maybe not, we live every day, we will only die once.
The must-see documentary, Saving My Tomorrow, a family special will debut December 15th exclusively on HBO. Plan for a family and friends viewing and look for more Saving My Tomorrow coming soon for Earth Day and every day.
