That's me in the sunnies and knee wrap (my life!) with a few on my close and personal, Runkeeper friends out for a brisk Fun Run across the Brooklyn Bridge on a crisp October morning. Setting the occasion for our run group to put to the test 7 ways to step up your running fitness workout with the Runkeeper app. Trust me, I am far from an expert or professional runner, evidence being my wrapped up knee, however, I am methodical and all for firsthand experience. Here's a look at the new and improved, updated Runkeeper app.

"Every one. Every run. Join the over 45 million users who’ve discovered the joy of running with the original and the best running app on the planet, Runkeeper. With Runkeeper, turn your phone into the GPS tracker that is dedicated to bringing the fun and the motivation you want into your workout routine."
* Track & Log Activities
As a rookie recreational runner, my mind is still adjusting to learning the lingo, while keeping pace with the best of the best. Using Runkeeper app allows instant calculation of running pace, cycling speed, route distance, elevation and calorie burn for any physical fitness activity with accuracy, in real time. It's also useful to find and run pre-planned running routes and even add your run location route onto the map. Keep in mind that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
* Basic Stats & Compare Workouts
With the ability to hear audio progress updates while I am working out breaks down information about the total mileage, calorie count, pace, speed, cadence trends and steps for every run. While I'm in the process of getting familiar with my stats, it's valuable to have automatic recording and access of my progress. For those of us with a competitive athletic nature, enter your indoor cardio and gym workouts to compare your activity on the Runkeeper Leaderboard.
* Runkeeper DJ (For iOS Only)
Anytime that I have one less item to focus on, I'm winning! The rockstar Runkeeper DJ synchronizes the rhythm of your pace to your iTunes account, so that you can say goodbye to having to skip through bad tracks during your workout and afterwards review the complete rundown with your playlist and pace for each song compiled from music and playlists in your iTunes library or Spotify.
* Prescribed Workouts
Getting prescribed workouts based on my running level, schedule, and the weather is like having my own personal trainer giving useful workout recommendations. It's simple to find and follow running or walking training plans as a beginner, get coached with 10k, Half-Marathon or Full Marathon training plans. Your training calendar is displayed in the app, audio cues direct the training plan workouts or with audio coaching. I'm more than just a little amazed by the ability to sync your Bluetooth heart rate monitor allowing Runkeeper to track your heart rate and help you to maintain within appropriate heart rate zones.
* Premium Training Plans & Lifetime Insights
With a Runkeeper upgrade, I am able to see my personalized fitness goals with Goal Coach and continue to track progress over time for a comprehensive performance history. Utilize lifetime and goal insights to rank each run for later review.
* Live Broadcasting
Watch me go! Boast and brag about your athletic abilities and activities with friends on Runkeeper, Twitter and Facebook.
Post your run or walk info in real time on Facebook or Twitter allowing friends and family to give you a shout-out of encouragement as you work your way toward the finish line.
* Keep Connected
The Runkeeper app has an integration for Apple Watch, Pebble, Fitbit and other fitness apps for nutrition, sleep monitoring, weight monitoring, step tracking, calorie counting and more. The standalone Apple Watch app allows you to run without your phone and keep track with Runkeeper.
