Standing today as a the youngest Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, when at 15 years old, Malala Yousafzai, was targeted by the Taliban and sustained critical injuries from a gunshot wound to the head as she was traveling home on a school bus in Pakistan. Standing then and even more empowered now, Malala is as an advocate for the more than 60 million girls denied an education. Her story of injustice raised awareness from supporters around the world and launched a global movement to stand #withMalala. Let's make this happen, Malala and millions of girls are depending on you for support.
School was always one of the places where I was free to stand on my own merits, as my own person, rising to the challenges of learning and growing in a nurturing environment. Incredibly, in this time of competitive educational advancements, more than 60 million girls remain out of school all around the world. This is unacceptable and it’s time that we take action and petition to end this inequality. Releasing internationally, the documentary, He Named Me Malala will premiere without commercial interruptions on Monday, February 29, at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo MUNDO in the United States. Following the premier, a global release of the documentary is planned for 171 countries and in 45 languages. Adding to the noted works of acclaimed documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim, (“An Inconvenient Truth,” “Waiting for Superman”) demonstrates how Malala, her father, Zia, and her family passionately stand in the fight for an education for all girls worldwide. Sharing a candid glimpse into Malala’s life prior to and following the malicious attack, which Malala miraculously survived, He Named Me Malala, has the goal of fueling action in nations far and wide. The call to action from The Malala Fund is for a united movement to stand #withMalala, showing global support for girls to receive 12 years of free, safe, quality primary and secondary education.
National Geographic Channel and 21st Century Fox working in partnership with the Malala Fund launched a social initiative to raise awareness for girls’ right to education and safe schools for every child. Thissocial activation conceptualizes the societal absences resulting when girls do not have access to education. The Facebook application allows supporters to transform their profile picture into a yearbook photo. Their yearbook photo then adds animation that fades away the female users’ photos. "This powerful visual metaphor sheds light on the 60 million girls out of school worldwide and inspires people to learn more about Malala’s mission."
This simple show of support makes a tremendous difference. For every person participating in the social activation through March 10, 21st Century Fox will donate $1 to the Malala Fund. Likewise, a $1 donation will also be contributed to the fund for each tweet using the hashtag #withMalala during this time period, for a total donation of up to $50,000.
