We became friends when I was only a 9-year-old Little Miss. Attending an intermediate school educating select students competitively accepted into their "gifted and talented" academic program, it was a challenge to find a friend. We found one another, making connections into each other's lives as witty, yet slightly introverted, kindred spirits. As the years sailed along, we rolled the waves of life's highs and lows, together through friendship, separated by distance. With little warning, tides shifted and we were separated by a changing tide forever carrying her to an eternally distant shore. We never had a chance to prepare, to be afraid, to reminisce, to be angry, to accept the magnitude of an everlasting loss. How to Empower Yourself When Loving Your Friend Through Cancer
Contemplating the shift in a relationship following the diagnosis of cancer is a difficult situation to imagine. Having lost one of my closest friends to misdiagnosed cancer, I struggle to conceive of the progression of our friendship, had we known her prognosis. Inspirational author, Marissa Henley offers her firsthand experience as a cancer survivor in Loving Your Friend Through Cancer - Moving Beyond "I'm Sorry" to Meaningful Support.
"As a cancer survivor, I hear this question all the time: “A friend of mine just found out she has cancer. What do I say? How can I help?” I know from experience the struggle to figure out how to support a friend during difficult times. This book is the conversation I wish I could have with the close friends of every woman battling cancer. In this book, I weave together my cancer story and the stories of other survivors and caregivers with practical advice and suggestions for friends of those with cancer. My goal is to empower women to confidently and compassionately minister to their friends with cancer. I pray that Loving Your Friend Through Cancer will encourage cancer-fighters and those who care about them as they walk through cancer together." While praying and searching for helpful answers in difficult times, often we encounter more questions and confusion. An important takeaway Henley equips us with in Loving Your Child Through Cancer is a clearer understanding of the fact that we each have unique situations which should be addressed uniquely. Friends are not to feel the need to transfer the pain and tribulations of another person facing cancer, however connecting together as a part of an uplifting spiritual circle surrounding their lives with love and empowerment. Actionable steps taken to empower yourself while raising cancer awareness, empowers other friends and family living with cancer.
