Why Read Alone When We Can Read Together in a Book Club

Now is the time to do better. This statement is personally empowering, a simple affirmation filled with incredible truth and relevance. Recently, I came across information revealing that in feedback reviews, when asked if there was room for improvement, the answer is very rarely, no. Quite logical, as even giving our very best efforts, there's always room for growth. We'll never achieve perfection, as perfect does not exist in our world. Let's agree to stop chasing perfection, to do better, achieving our personal best. As an avid reader, I've amassed an impressive accumulation of books which I've read and for the most part enjoyed. Moving beyond my passion for reading to do better, I've joined a community of encouraging, supportive readers in an online book club sharing our insight on "uplifting and inspirational reads". Why read alone when we can read together in an online book club.

Why Read Alone When We Can Read Together in a Book Club

How is your life enriched through literature? Reading for pleasure is my favorite way to escape from reality, expand my knowledge base, as well as connect with life through the perspectives of others. Bringing observations and opinions for an open collective of people reading the same content is a better way to gain understanding of books. Honestly, as I was joining Faithwords Book Club, I was reminded of my son's AP English Literature class reading Ken Kesey's One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest for classroom discussion. While life's responsibilities, time constraints, and distance prevent many of us from sitting together to share personal observations on the book of the month.

Aside from the value of gaining a deeper understanding of a book when collecting new ideas from fellow readers, better accountability is another benefit of reading with a book club. Aiming to be current on reading, prepared with topics of interest, and applying the author's work to your experiences requires commitment. As a new member of the free FaithWords Facebook Group, our current read is Take The Day Off - Receiving God's Gift Of Rest written by bestselling author, Robert Morris (affiliate). Here's where I'll be seeking the support of my reading/accountability partners. Reading with a schedule and when the subject at hand is rest- I'm a work in progress.

"In Take the Day Off, Pastor Morris explains why rest is central to your wellbeing, how to do it, and how helpful it can be. You will be inspired to experience true rest and make it a priority in the rhythm of your weekly schedule. Don’t wait and delay God’s blessings in your life. Start implementing the principle of rest in your life and you will see eternal benefits."
Gaining notice as a life-changing work helping bring weary souls to rest, Take The Day Off (affiliate) features a foreword by Max Lucado, with acclaimed reviews from esteemed colleagues-
“I strongly encourage every believer to read and reread this book. I pray it becomes a staple in every Christian home, where we function at our highest level, and can in turn raise a generation to do the same.”
– Bill Johnson, Bethel Church, Author of The Way of Life and Raising Giant-Killers
“I discovered a deep revelation of the importance of Sabbath from Pastor Robert’s teaching years ago. Applying these principles of rest to my life has greatly impacted me and my family and has allowed us to run the marathon of life well. I encourage you to read and apply the wisdom of this book to your life!”
– Kari Jobe Carnes, Worship Leader, Songwriter

“A must-read if you’re feeling overwhelmed and struggling for a light at the end of the tunnel.”
- Danny Gokey, Grammy-nominated recording artist
“As I work with CEOs and other high performers, overload is one of their biggest issues. The boundaries of time and space have disappeared…You are never safe until you remember that God has commanded us to protect some time to rest. Neuroscience and other fields have proven it to be true, and Robert gives us some practical ways to do it.”
- Dr. Henry Cloud, psychologist and co-author of Boundaries
