100 Years of Madame Alexander Dolls | A Centennial Celebration

"Madame believed in furthering compassion, empathy and meaningful relationships through doll play and creativity. Drawing on classic literature and a variety of cultures, Madame created dolls that took people of all ages to new places of love and understanding. With the soul of an artist and the imagination of an inventor, she spent a lifetime crafting beautiful dolls that still inspire passion in collectors and expand children’s imaginations. Nearly a century later, the Madame Alexander Doll Company continues to honor her originality, vision and purpose of making the world a kinder place."

Madame Alexander, born in New York in 1895, as Beatrice Alexander Behrman, was a savvy toy designer and entrepreneur. Founded in 1923, the Madame Alexander Doll Company is noted as being one of the largest doll manufacturers in the United States. Highly sought after by doll collectors for their exquisite detailing, Madame Alexander was inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame in 1988, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the toy industry.
As a young girl, Madame Alexander often observed her father as he diligently worked in his doll hospital, repairing delicate porcelain dolls. Inspired by her dream of creating beautiful dolls designed to be loved and played with she replaced fragile porcelain with fabric materials and innovated “sleep eyes”— allowing dolls to "blink" and close their eyes.

As an industry leader, Madame Alexander is credited with creating the first officially licensed toys for Alice in Wonderland, Gone with the Wind, Little Women among other accomplishments, including-

- Designed first doll of young Queen Elizabeth commemorating her father’s coronation

- Introduced Jeannie, one of the industry’s first walking dolls

- Created first plastic face mold in the doll industry

- Debuted Cissy, the first fashion doll in America

During play time, young learners have the opportunity to enjoy themselves while also enhancing cognitive development for emerging problem-solving skills, creativity, imagination, and critical thinking. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) development through play helps children conceptualize ways to express and manage their emotions, develop empathy, and build self-esteem and social skills.

Honoring 100 Years of Madame Alexander dolls during their centennial celebration is a pioneering tribute to "The Mother of Modern Doll Play". Madame Alexander's lasting legacy, vision, and achievements continue to thrive today, teaching children kindness, compassion, and responsibility through play.
