Nestled within our mountainside home in the scenic Hudson Valley of New York State, we live just across the Hudson River from Bear Mountain State Park. Driving, riding, or hiking over the Purple Heart Veterans Memorial Bridge (formerly Bear Mountain Bridge), this section of the Appalachian Trail winds through over 5,000 acres situated in both Rockland and Orange Counties. At the peak of Bear Mountain, rising high above the Hudson River, a lookout area at the base of Perkins Memorial Tower is a popular hiking destination. Delivering a stunning view, Perkins Tower, built in 1934, on a clear day showcases views of four states — New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. Bear Mountain State Park

Featuring many seasonal outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, biking, fishing, boating, swimming, picnicking, ice skating, and camping, Bear Mountain State Park is home to more than 40 miles of trails traversing through the park, including the Appalachian Trail, passing along the northern section. Here's what you should know before you go-

Location — Palisades Parkway | Route 9W North, Bear Mountain, NY 10911— Latitude 41.31294 Longitude -73.98895

The park is dog-friendly, however all dogs must be on a leash not more than 6 feet long and are not allowed in buildings, picnic areas, bathing areas, on walkways or in the Trailside Museum and Wildlife Center.

Bear Mountain Inn

One of the park's main historic attractions is the Bear Mountain Inn, a rustic lodge built in 1915 offering overnight accommodations, casual and fine dining, and souvenir shopping.

Trailside Museums and Zoo

Take time to visit this small zoo providing views and education on animals native to the area including as bears, coyotes, foxes, deer, bald eagles, and more.

Perkins Memorial Tower

Named after George W. Perkins, a conservationist credited for helping to establish the park, the tower is located atop Bear Mountain. Take in spectacular panoramic views of the Hudson River Valley and Purple Heart Veterans Memorial Bridge spanning the Hudson River from the tower. Perkins Memorial Drive and Tower are open from April through late November, weather permitting.

Hessian Lake

This lake is located within Bear Mountain State Park and offers opportunities for boating and fishing.

Appalachian Trail

Hiking at Bear Mountain State Park leads to the lowest elevation point on the Appalachian Trail, 124 feet above sea level at the Hudson River, also climbing up the mountain to over 1,200 feet (366 meters) above sea level.

Merry-Go-Round

The Merry-Go-Round at Bear Mountain State Park is a vintage carousel that has been operating since 1925. It features hand-carved animals and a Wurlitzer organ.

If you're planning to enjoy an exhilarating hike, here are a few basic reminders before you go-

Start Smart - Select a trail that is appropriate for your hiking skill level and physical abilities. Wear shoes or boots that are comfortable footwear providing good traction. 

Check the Weather Forecast - Prepare yourself for conditions on the trail by wearing appropriate clothing and packing essential gear.

Hiking Essentials - Bring along identification, water, snacks, first-aid kit, map, compass, whistle, and flashlight. Remember to drink sips of water to avoid dehydration. Take all trash with you to follow Leave No Trace practice.

Follow Trail Markers - Remain on designated trails, following guide signs or markers. Remember to respect any wildlife along trails, keeping a safe distance away without disturbing their natural habitat.

Emergency Preparedness - Maintain a fully charged cell phone, a whistle, and a first-aid kit in case of emergency. Leave a copy of your itinerary with a family member of friend informing them where you are going and when you plan to return.
