Located along NYC's Museum Mile, a length of Fifth Avenue on Manhattan's east side between 82nd Street and 105th Street are a few internationally-acclaimed museums. Travelled to as a popular tourist sightseeing destination, El Museo del Barrio, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum, Museum of the City of New York, Jewish Museum, Cooper-Hewitt Museum, Smithsonian Design Museum, and National Academy Museum are all centrally located.

El Museo del Barrio's Mission

"The mission of El Museo del Barrio is to present and preserve the art and culture of Puerto Ricans and all Latin Americans in the United States. Through its extensive collections, varied exhibitions and publications, bilingual public programs, educational activities, festivals and special events, El Museo educates its diverse public in the richness of Caribbean and Latin American arts and cultural history. By introducing young people to this cultural heritage, El Museo is creating the next generation of museum-goers, while satisfying the growing interest in Caribbean and Latin American art of a broad national and international audience."

El Museo del Barrio was founded in 1969 by Puerto Rican educators, artists, and activists inspired by the civil rights movement and activism for social justice. Home to an extensive collection of art, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, textiles, videos, artifacts, and exhibitions all illustrating Latin America and Caribbean artistic perspectives.

The museum exhibitions shed light on the talents of established and emerging artists, as well as hosts bilingual educational programs and activities, lectures, workshops, concerts, and film screenings for the community. Super Sabado (Super Saturday) is a day-long event featuring music, dance, art-making activities, and other cultural programs. Bundle up for a New York winter, January hosts one of the museum's most widely celebrated annual events, the Three Kings Day Parade and Celebration, a festive celebration. 

Considered to be one of the leading cultural institutions dedicated to the Latinx experience in the United States, El Museo del Barrio is open to the public Thursday - Sunday from 11:00am - 5:00pm. Located at 1230 Fifth Avenue at 104th Street, in East Harlem, El Museo is a true treasure within one of the largest Latinx communities in New York City.
